The National Parks Service has named Phillips Seabrook Associates as the plan review agency for an adaptive reuse of the historic Pier 2 Shed at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco. Phillips Seabrook will also serve as inspector of record for the project. The Shed is part of a National Historic Landmark District.

The 69,000-sq.-ft. interior structure is being transformed into a Graduate Center for the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). It will feature graduate artists’ studios and areas for public engagement.

SFAI’s new Graduate Center facilities include more than 170 graduate artists’ studios, public exhibition galleries, performance installation rooms, multipurpose teaching spaces, a black box theater, and a workshop.

SFAI’s Graduate Center will be inserted into the historic landmark shed in strict conformation with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation, and in close cooperation with the National Parks Service, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the State Historic Preservation Office. The Shed, originally constructed in 1912, had been deteriorating from decades of exposure to the harsh marine environment.

The architect for the adaptive reuse of the historic structure is Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects (LMSA). The structural engineer is Rutherford + Chekene. Construction for the project will be initiated in May 2016 and will be completed in May 2017 with Oliver & Company serving as the general contractor.
